Message from the River Residents Group:Β How to (effectively) report an excessively noisy party boat?
Most of the Thames leisure boats are wonderful. But a small number persistently cause problems. If you live on the river, you can help yourselves and everyone else by reporting the boats that cause noise nuisance, using the following multiple-choice Google form that contains all the information needed to make a valid noise submission in two or three minutes.Β
This form generates an email that arrives in your own in-box. It will be automatically copied to your own local Environmental Protection Team plus the London Port Health Authority (LPHA), which is charged with dealing with river noise (email also supplied on the form). Some vessels do not display their names clearly. If you arenβt sure what boat is causing the disturbance, this will tell you:Β
You can also download this free app on your smartphone and see which boats are travelling on the river at any given time.Β
The Google form provides centralized record-keeping, which has made a huge difference, giving us figures to substantiate our case when we apply to review the alcohol licences of rowdy boats. It has, for example, enabled us to force the Terrible Thames to change its acoustic system to become less intrusive. As of Spring 2024, nearly 2000 complaints have been registered using this Google form. The LPHA and Licensing Authorities do take notice.Β
You can make a difference. In Amsterdam, party boats are no longer allowed to play amplified music in the city centre. This was achieved by βpeople powerβ, after citizens got together to bombard the authorities with a volume of complaints that could not in the end be ignored.Β
We ask you to report only very bad boats. We donβt want to stop people enjoying the Thames. And we donβt want to cause unnecessary hardship to the boat businesses that have suffered from the pandemic and the cost of living crisis.Β
